Christmas Greetings

School will re-open on Thur Jan 7th for all classes.

Almost There



As construction of the new college nears completion the expected date of handover of the keys is expected to be 23rd December. Although work on the landscaping is slightly delayed due to the inclement weather the full move to the new premises will be early in the new year when furniture and equipment are installed. From Jan onwards arrangements will be made to show people around.

Athy College has been informed that teachers intend to withdraw their services on Thur next 3rd December as part of the public service strike day. Any inconvenience is regrettable.

Recent visitor Ryan Tubridy captivated students with lively banter and engaging chat as he talked about his school days and his career in the media. Joined by Aonghus McNally the visit entertained the school communityfor the afternoon.

Autumn Evening Classes



Adult education Evening classes for the autumn at Athy Community College can be enrolled for On line this year. This is the first time that on-line enrolment has been introduced and is proving very successful. To enrol visit www.kildarevec.ie or if you feel you would like to enrol at the college you can visit by day (office hours) or call in at the enrolment evening September 16th 7 – 9pm. This will be the last evening classes in the current building.

New School

Excellent progress is being made on the new building with a completion date in December. Currently scaffolding is being removed and the pitches are being seeded.

Enrolments for 2010 are now being invited on a first come basis.

That's politics








Leaving Certificate Applied students welcomed some of our local politicians to the school last Thursday to answer questions about local issues. Thanks to Cllrs Mark Dalton, Aoife Breslin and Mary O'Sullivan for facing the music and thanks to the students for organising it.

Music Workshop


Shane Sullivan and Mickey Joe Harte, the former Eurovision contestant visited the school to promote a Music workshop which they will be holding in the town in July. Students showed great interest in taking part.

Government in Action



All three local Dail deputies presented themselves to a group of students in Athy Community College as prt of an Oireachtas workshop which seeks to make government relevant to young people. TD's Jack Wall and Saán Ó Fearghaill and Minister SEán Power fielded questions from an eager bunch of student whohad plenty to ask. The three politicians gave straight answers to sensitive questions on racism and employment and it was a learning experience for all.

Information Evening



Athy College held an Information Evening in the Clanard Court hotel with presentations on several aspects of the new building. Enrolments for next year and future years were taken on the night. The dining room was filled to capacity with intending students, parents and teachers.

All Fired Up


Fire Officer Ben Woodhouse spoke with some first year students to give them detail of the new Fire Cadet programme which is to be introduced at Athy Fire Station. Some 12 young people will be selected to participate in this programme which is a very exciting opportunity for students
